The
Fit Village: Health for the Whole Community
Six
million kids in the US are seriously overweight,
and one third of adults are considered obese.
Obesity is linked to serious conditions such as heart disease
and late-onset diabetes, and is a direct result of an inadequate,
sedentary and fast-food based lifestyle.
Aghast
at the lack of health-awareness and proper-nutrition in this nation,
fitness expert Raphael Picaud, who made his mark in the industry
as one of the world's most exclusive and sought-after trainers,
founded last year Fit 4 Free, a grassroots organization
dedicated to integrating health and physical fitness as a fundamental
part of the culture for all socio-economic levels.
The
Fit Village is Fit 4 Free's central project:right now being developed in Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico,
the Fit Village Project will work to establish a "fitness-compatible"
society, where people and activities achieve a healthy lifestyle
not through restrictive diets and daunting individuals workouts,
but rather as an enjoyable communal effort.
Programs will include a free gym and free classes, parks
fitted with fitness equipment, and much focus on education. Picaud plans to increase knowledge about preventive health
and nutrition with the help of, for instance, billboard announcements,
chefs' advice on alternative food choices, or nutritional information
on restaurants' menus. The
goal is ultimately to foster community involvement and interaction
in order to establish--or restore--healthy diets and activities
as a normal part of everyday life.
